Q: Most of the fans
love the old songs, and say that they are the best, but
how does the band feel about them? Do you guys still love the old stuff,
or
do you groan when certain songs are brought up?
A: I/we can appreciate certain elements of the older songs,
however, as a
whole, we don’t find them as mature as the new songs. We want to play
songs that represent who we are as musicians/writers/performers/singers.
Some old songs might have a charm to them and we look back fondly, but
some of the problems we run into are: lyrics we can no longer relate to,
playing styles or arrangements that we find juvenile, strange changes that
are hard to do
when we have rehearsed or listened to the song in ages, or simply they are
songs that predate Louie joining the band and its no fun to do stuff
without
his input on keyboard parts. We don’t neglect those songs to piss you off,
but we have a ton of new material and its more fun to fresh stuff. Having
said that, when we soundchecked at the Fillmore in SF on the second to
last
day of the tour, we ran through "it goes to bed" and "no wait but listen".
It was fun. Then matt got bored and walked off the soundcheck. Then Robert
played drums and Ned sang lead. We did a Supergrass song. Then we finally
let the other bands soundcheck.
Q: At the New Haven
Toad's Place concert you tried some crowd surfing; did you try that at
other concerts? And do you think Rooney fans are prepared
for crowd surfing guitarists?
A: We all knew it was going to be our last tour of this album so we
stretched
ourselves to make the shows more exciting than ever.
